Questions and comments related to locating, accessing, and using PDS Geo data

  1. The LOLA data derived products, Digital Elevation Model Coregistered with SELENE Data(SLDEM) and Gridded Data Record Shape Map(GDRDEM) in the south polar region 85S to 90S shows data with only 30m/px resolution. However the South pole atlas, https://www.lpi.usra.edu/lunar/lunar-south-pole-atlas/ discusses data with 5m/px resolution. How and from where can I download the 5m/px resolution DEM of the Lunar South pole region?

  2. Hi community, I'm working with ENVI 5.3 + IDL coupled with CAT 7.4 trying to process TRDR images (.trr3). I'm based primarly on the CRISM data processing workshop from 2012 and 2017 and my worksteps are as follows: 1.- Apply the ATM corrections with CAT to the images 2.- Apply de map projection fo the image 3.- Obtain the summary parameters image Nevertheless, I have certain doubts about this, so I would be very grateful if you can provide me some help please. My questions are: - Should I obtain the summary parameters and then apply the map projection or it is the opposite? - It is necessary the "ratioing" for the spectra and use the "Flatten s…

  4. Hi dear community, I'm working primarly with MTRDR products for mineral identification using ENVI 5.3 + IDL with CAT 7.4 coupled and i have some questions: 1.- Why when i visualize the spectral profile for some scene in any pixel the profile shape is essentially the same only with changes on the data value?. Does that mean there's only one dominant phase per scene?. Even when i use the Browse Products and can distinguish more than one phase (colors) the profile for the default image (true color) keeps its form. I don't know if this is a coincidence for the scenes that i've analyzed or there is something wrong on the procedure that i'm following. 2.- It is…

  5. Hi dear community, I'm starting with the CRISM data processing with ENVI 5.3 + IDL + CAT 7.4 but for now i feel a few lost, altough i keep the adventure. In any case, i have a couple of questions (very basics, probably) for the TRDR images from the CRISM map data center. 1.- Why when i open the trr3 images with CAT it appears as a rectangle (img_1) and not compressed or deformed like the images that i've seen in papers or documents? additionally it opens inverted so i have to apply a 180° rotation. 2.- When i open the images the band 1 has a value of 65535.0 (img_2)! and that carries problems when i want to visualize the spectral plot. So, it is recommend…

Hi, I am trying to load .img data from mro-m-rss-5-sdp-v1/mrors_1xxx/data/rsdmap/ into a Win 10 /ArcGIS 10.5 environment. I have been treating these data e.g. http://pds-geosciences.wustl.edu/mro/mro-m-rss-5-sdp-v1/mrors_1xxx/data/rsdmap/ggmro_120_anom_100.img as img files and keep getting the message "file corrupt" when I try to mount them. I have used a selection of analysis tools to try and find why these files are not loading. Any suggestions welcome please

  8. Note for ENVI users of map-projected data: Some Geosciences Node hosted map-projected data sets (.IMG files) are not read by ENVI as projected data sets. Using the Geospatial Data Abstraction Library (GDAL) gdal_translate command, users can easily convert most of these data products into GeoTIFF or ENVI file formats which are read by ENVI as projected data. GDAL packages for various computer systems can be found here: https://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/wiki/DownloadingGdalBinaries. The Windows package used in this example is the OSGEO4W 64-bit version. A MacOS X build is available, as well. Download and install a GDAL package that has gdal_translate.exe. gdal_translate.exe ru…

  11. Hi, I would like to know where can I get the Martian Global data such as TES derived Mineralogy, inertia etc. I need the georeferenced data. I tried to download from this website(www.mars.asu.edu/data/) but the problem here is I am unable to download the georeferenced with true value. The website gives the data in PNG format which can be used for visual purpose. It would be really great If any of you can help me to get these data sets.

  12. Hi, I need some help to understand the data processing of CRISM data (TRR3). I use CAT tool coupled with ENVI 5.3. I use CAT manual (workshop manual available in the website) for the processing which goes as Conversion of PDS to CAT--> Photographic and Atmospheric Correction--> Georeferencing. I observe that after the atmosphere correction spectra do not change much but once perform the geometric correction it shows changes as shown in the figure. Is obtained result correct? What is the main reason for this change? I would also like to know how to obtain ratioed spectra. I am familiar with spectra ratios but my confusion is how to choose spectra (den…

  14. Hello all, Most of the LROC CDRNAC products has both '.img' and '.tif' files. I am assuming that both the files contain images of the same region but the '.img' files have meta data. I have observed that '.img' are typically 300MB and '.tif' files are 30MB in size. I have the following two questions, 1. Why is the '.img' file typically 10 times larger than the '.tif' files ? Is the meta data some huge in size? 2. Some products, for example M1185002263RC does not have a 'tif' file. Is it not available for some products? I am actually creating a mosaic area of 10x10 Km using LROC images of 1.5m/pixel resolution (approx) by stitching them together. I a…

When using this link: http://crism-map.jhuapl.edu/details.php?data=frt_webmap_polygons&shape=25477&x=-8.197515&y=22.000965 there is a cube that apparently exists... however when trying to access the IR image data, the subsequent link says that the data is not available. Is there a way to access the two frt000243d0_07_if166l_trr3 files? Thank you.

  16. Hello all, As per the definition of Emission angle given in http://ode.rsl.wustl.edu/moon/pagehelp/quickstartguide/index.html?seach_page.htm#filterbyanglerange, higher values of emission_angle indicate more oblique viewing. Consider the two LROC products M1099037220LC and M1108467737LC with a very close emission angles of 1.78 deg and 1.76 deg respectively. However M1099037220LC appears to be very oblique with elliptical shaped craters and M1108467737LC appears to be nadir looking with almost circular craters. Can you please explain why is it so ? The screenshot of the LROC images are attached for you reference. Thank You, Shyam.

  17. Hello, I am currently working with the CRISM Data in Matlab and when I load it, the data is always saved in a rectangular matrix. But since I need the original shape, I need to transform the cube data into it's original form. I have two screenshots how it should look like. I have also been able to read out the DDR file, but I can't find anything on the web on how to use that data. I would appreciate it if someone could help me further regarding this.

  18. Hello All, Consider the LROC Product ID M181345381RC.The details of the latitude and longitude are as follows, Maximum Latitude 30.2 Minimum Latitude 27.72 Westernmost Longitude 333.81 Easternmost Longitude 334.13 The above values have a precision of only two decimal points which means a maximum of 0.005 deg error is possible. If we assume that that the angular resolution of moon is 30Km/deg(approx) then there can be a map tie error of 30000*0.005=150 meters in position. Is there any other source of information with higher prec…

  20. Hi, I use CRISM data for minerals mapping (in general). Is it possible to compare with GRS instrument (HEND or other products) elements concentration data/map? I am aware of the coarser resolution of GRS products i.e. ~300 km or 5 degrees whereas CRISM spatial resolution is 18/36 m/pixel. Is GRS data available at better resolutions? or by any means can compare these two diverse resolution data results? Can we use GRS instruments data for local mapping of elements concentration despite its coarser resolution? Your comments and suggestions would be highly admired and helpful... Thanks,

  22. Started by Subhabose,

I wish to utilize selected portions of Clementine NIR data. I downloaded a few files from the Lunar ODE. One of the downloaded folders was 'CL_0064', which further led to lun276 and lun277 folders and many subsequent folders. The final file had a (.276) extension, which I am not able to open in ENVI. Please let me know the correct procedure to open such files in ENVI or ArcMap. I also downloaded 'clemdcmp' and 'climdisp' from https://pdsimage2.wr.usgs.gov/archive/clem1-l_e_y-a_b_u_h_l_n-2-edr-v1.0/cl_0064/software/ . However, I am not able to install either of the software. Please help!

  23. Dear all, I have been trying to use CRISM TRDR (trr3) image of ''FRS0002AEAB_01_IF167L_TRR3'' and ''FRS0003012C_01_IF167L_TRR3'' using CAT in ENVI. However, after standard corrections (ATP), I tried to project the image cube using ''Project Single Cube Data'' option. I got a projected image of bad shape which does NOT match with map context image and kml shape (attached the screenshots). I guess only a part of the image was projected. Also, CAT showed a message after performing the processes (attached also). Can anyone please let me know how can I fix the problem? Thank you, Emran

  24. Dear all, I was trying process CRISM TRDR (.trr3) data using standard corrections in CAT 7.3.1. following the procedure: 1. FRT IF to CAT 2. ATP and Photometric correction 3. Map Utilities- Project Single Cube 4. Summary Products However, when I tried to project single cube the CAT showed an error message though I got a projected image in the window. Attached here is the error message. How can I fix this problem? Another thing, is the procedure above complete to analyze CRISM data? Or, I need more corrections like EPF, Spectral shift, spectral smile etc. to process TRDR data? Can I use MTRDR data directly without any correction, ju…

  25. Below I have included a Python 3.6 sample script for downloading files from the PDS Geosciences Node. The sample includes a configuration for downloading data files from both a PDS Geosciences Node archive and files from an Orbital Data Explorer (ODE) cart request. The script supports multiple levels of sub directories, as well. The script includes variables that should be set by the user for his or her environment. The example PDS data set and ODE cart request both exist, and they are available for test executions of the script. Python 3.6 is required for the script to function. This script is also available for download in the downloads section of the forum. # PDSGe…
